CHICAGO- State Senator Antonio “Tony” Munoz (D-Chicago) joined community leaders along with state and city officials to celebrate the return of the 31st Street bus on Tuesday.
“Implementing this route provides access to employment opportunities and links residents with other bus routes and train stations, creating an easier way to reach more destinations,” Munoz said.
The 31st Street bus service is back in service after being discontinued in 1997. The pilot program will provide service for six months, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Chicago Transit Authority will evaluate the continuation of the route when the trial period ends in February 2017, which is contingent upon the popularity among riders.
The No. 31 bus route had been eliminated for lack of ridership. Due to the recent development around 31st Street in recent years, there is a new demand for the service. The line shuttles passengers between the Ashland CTA Orange Line station on the city's Lower West Side and the Lake Meadows Shopping Center.
