State Senator Tony Munoz (D-Chicago) met today with members of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) during their legislative rally day in Springfield.

The Coalition was in Springfield to meet with lawmakers and inform them of their 2012 legislative agenda.  The ICIRR agenda includes a number of issues including promoting safer roadways by providing drivers’ licenses for immigrants; promoting civic engagement through encouraging more immigrants to become naturalized citizens; improving access to healthcare; creating an Asian American State Employment Plan; and  increasing opportunities for youth.

“I have and will continue to work with the Coalition to ensure that the rights of those who are working towards the goal of citizenship are not forgotten by the state,” said Senator Munoz.  “I was a proud sponsor of the Illinois DREAM Commission last year, and I look forward to working with the ICIRR once again to pass legislation that will ensure all Illinoisans are treated equally.”

ICIRR is dedicated to promoting the rights of immigrants and refugees to full and equal participation in the civic, cultural, and social life of Illinois’ diverse society.

In partnership with their member organizations, the Coalition educates and organizes immigrant and refugee communities to assert their rights; promotes citizenship and civic participation; monitors, analyzes, and advocates on immigrant-related issues; and informs the general public about the contributions of immigrants and refugees.
